6-Day Classic Tanzania Safari with Hadzabe

Tour Overview

This six-day journey combines the classic northern Tanzania wildlife circuit with a meaningful cultural encounter at Lake Eyasi, home to the Hadzabe and Datoga communities. The itinerary moves naturally from the elephant landscapes of Tarangire into the open plains of the central Serengeti, continues through the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, and concludes with time alongside one of East Africa’s last traditional hunter-gatherer cultures.

By limiting travel distances and keeping two nights in the Serengeti, the safari maintains a balanced rhythm between wildlife immersion and cultural connection without extending beyond a comfortable travel timeframe.
Game viewing focuses on resident predators and grazing herds, ensuring reliable wildlife encounters in any season.

Unhurried, authentic, and grounded in real guiding practice, this itinerary offers an unmatched introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife and cultures.

Safari Itinerary

1 DAY

Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Destination

Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and ecologically important parks, covering approximately 2,850 square kilometers. The park is defined by the Tarangire River, which serves as the primary water source and attracts wildlife, especially during the dry season.

The landscape is dominated by ancient baobab trees, open savannah, and seasonal swamps. Tarangire is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, often seen in significant numbers along the river.

In addition to elephants, visitors may encounter lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and a wide range of bird species. The park’s quieter atmosphere compared to Serengeti makes it ideal for a relaxed and immersive safari experience.

Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Day Activity

Late-morning and afternoon game drives explore riverine woodland and open savannah, following wildlife movement at a relaxed pace.
A picnic lunch inside the park keeps the day immersed in nature before continuing toward the Ngorongoro highlands.

Day 2 — Karatu to Central Serengeti

Destination

Serengeti National Park is one of the most established wildlife ecosystems in Africa. The park sits on a broad plateau shaped by ancient volcanic activity from the Ngorongoro Highlands. Its soils support short grass plains in the south and mixed savannah with acacia woodland in the central areas.

Key features include:

· Open grazing plains
· Granite kopjes used by predators
· Seasonal watercourses
· Riverine vegetation

Serengeti supports large populations of herbivores such as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, alongside resident predators including lion, hyena, leopard, and cheetah. This balance between prey and predator has remained stable for generations.

Day 2 — Karatu to Central Serengeti

Day Activity

Game viewing begins upon entering the park, turning the drive itself into an extended safari.
After a picnic lunch en route, the afternoon continues with wildlife tracking across the plains before arrival at camp.

Accommodation: Embalakai Serengeti

3 DAY

Day 3 — Full Day in Central Serengeti

Destination

Central Serengeti is one of the most reliable wildlife areas in Tanzania, shaped by open grasslands, scattered kopjes, and permanent water sources that support animals throughout the year.
This combination of habitat makes the region especially strong for resident predators such as lion, leopard, and cheetah, alongside elephant and large grazing herds.

Day 3 — Full Day in Central Serengeti

Day Activity

Morning and afternoon game drives move through different sectors of the central plains, sometimes covering considerable distance as recent tracks and sightings guide the route.
Without the need to relocate camps, there is time to remain longer at wildlife encounters, observe natural behavior, and follow the quiet rhythm of the bush.

A picnic lunch inside the park keeps the day continuous and immersed in nature before the afternoon drive continues as the light softens and animal movement increases again.

4 DAY

Day 4 — Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater, Overnight Karatu

Destination

The Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained wildlife sanctuary, formed by the collapse of an ancient volcano and now supporting one of the highest animal concentrations in Africa. Open grasslands, freshwater springs, and forested edges provide habitat for lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena, and—on fortunate days—the rare black rhino.

Day 4 — Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater, Overnight Karatu

Day Activity

After arriving at the crater rim, you descend to the floor and spend several hours exploring different habitats across the crater, moving slowly to allow steady wildlife observation and photography.
Because the day is centered entirely within the crater, the pace remains relaxed and immersive rather than rushed between locations.

A picnic lunch near the hippo pool provides time to rest while remaining surrounded by the crater’s wildlife and scenery. In the late afternoon, you ascend the crater wall and continue a short drive to the nearby highland town of Karatu.

Day 5 — Ngorongoro Highlands to Lake Eyasi

Destination

Lake Eyasi is home to the Hadzabe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa, as well as the Datoga, skilled pastoralists and metalworkers who have lived in the region for generations.
The landscape here feels very different from the national parks—quieter, more intimate, and closely connected to traditional daily life.

Day 5 — Ngorongoro Highlands to Lake Eyasi

Day Activity

Depending on arrival time, the afternoon may include a gentle introductory walk or visit with the Datoga community, offering insight into traditional homes, livestock keeping, and metalworking practices.
The pace remains respectful and informal, guided by local community members rather than a fixed tourist schedule.

Time is left open to rest and prepare for an early start the next morning, when Hadzabe families begin their daily routines.

6 DAY

Day 6 — Hadzabe Morning Experience, Return to Arusha

Destination

The Hadzabe maintain a traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle, relying on deep knowledge of the land, seasonal foods, and tracking skills passed through generations.
Encounters here are personal and small-scale, taking place within the natural environment rather than a constructed setting.

Day 6 — Hadzabe Morning Experience, Return to Arusha

Day Activity

You may choose simply to observe daily life, walking quietly with community members and learning about plants, tools, and survival knowledge.
For those who wish—and when appropriate—there can be opportunities for gentle participation, such as trying traditional foods, practicing archery, or accompanying a short hunting walk guided by the Hadzabe themselves.

Participation is always voluntary and respectful, ensuring the experience remains authentic for both visitors and community.
Later in the morning, you begin the return journey toward Arusha, arriving in the afternoon depending on road conditions.

The prices below are shown per person and vary depending on the number of travellers and accommodation category selected. Each range reflects real operating costs, including park and conservation fees (with VAT and other applicable taxes), vehicle use, crater service fees, and accommodation in the chosen category.
