2-Day Tarangire and Ngorongoro Budget Safari

Tour Overview

This two-day safari offers a compact yet rewarding introduction to Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, combining the wildlife-rich landscapes of Tarangire National Park with the breathtaking natural wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Departing from Arusha, the journey begins with a scenic drive to Tarangire National Park, renowned for its giant baobab trees, seasonal swamps, and large elephant herds that often roam near the Tarangire River. Game drives through this diverse landscape frequently reveal giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and a variety of predators, while birdlife flourishes across the savannah and woodland habitats. After a full day of wildlife exploration, the safari continues toward the fertile highlands surrounding Karatu, where you spend the night within the peaceful atmosphere of the Ngorongoro Highlands.

On the second day, the adventure continues with an early drive to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, then descends into the vast caldera floor for one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences. Often described as a natural wildlife sanctuary, the crater supports an extraordinary concentration of animals within its enclosed ecosystem, including lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, and large populations of plains game.

2 DAY

Day 2 — Ngorongoro Crater descent & return

Destination

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is internationally recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated for its outstanding universal value in biodiversity, geology, and human history. The crater itself is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, formed approximately two to three million years ago. Its enclosed 260 km² floor sustains a permanent population of more than 25,000 large mammals, creating one of the highest wildlife densities on the African continent.

In addition to its wildlife importance, the broader conservation area holds archaeological significance, including the nearby Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world..

Day 2 — Ngorongoro Crater descent & return

Day Activity

Depart before sunrise from Karatu to reach the crater rim in early morning light. After permit clearance, descend via the crater access road as the ecosystem begins to activate. The morning drive focuses on open plains where lion prides and hyena clans patrol grazing herds.

Move strategically between Lerai Forest (elephant bulls and leopard habitat), Gorigor Swamp (hippo concentration), and Lake Magadi (seasonal flamingo activity), adapting routes based on real-time wildlife movement reported via ranger networks and guide communication.

A premium bush picnic is arranged in a designated shaded area near the hippo pool, minimizing congestion and maintaining privacy. Afternoon exploration targets black rhino territories and predator activity before ascending the crater wall.

Ascend mid-afternoon and transfer comfortably back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Tour Cost

The prices below are shown per person and vary depending on the number of travellers and accommodation category selected. Each range reflects real operating costs, including park and conservation fees (with VAT and other applicable taxes), vehicle use, crater service fees, and accommodation in the chosen category.

Because lodge rates and availability can vary seasonally, we present a minimum–maximum range rather than a fixed number. As group size increases, shared costs are reduced, which lowers the overall price per traveller. Final quotations are confirmed based on exact travel dates and selected lodges.
