10 Days Southern Circuit Safari

Tour Overview

This 10-day Southern Tanzania expedition traverses three distinct ecosystems across one of Africa’s largest uninterrupted wilderness regions. From the floodplains of Mikumi to the Rufiji River system of Nyerere National Park and the baobab-studded savannahs of Ruaha, the journey emphasizes scale, remoteness, and ecological diversity.

Unlike the Northern Circuit, the Southern route has fewer visitors, but offers unique boat and walking safaris. Extended time in expansive landscapes where wildlife movements are less pressured by tourism concentration.

Highlights

Safari Itinerary

1 DAY

Day 1 – Arrival Dar es Salaam

Destination

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s primary commercial and logistical gateway to the Southern Circuit. Located along the Indian Ocean coastline, the city functions as the operational hub for road transfers and scheduled bush flights into Mikumi, Nyerere, and Ruaha.

Southern safaris typically depart early morning to maximize park access time. Proximity to Julius Nyerere International Airport allows flexible arrival schedules before entering remote wildlife zones.

Day 1 – Arrival Dar es Salaam

Day Activity

Airport meet-and-greet and transfer to a coastal or city-based hotel. Evening at leisure to recover from travel before departure into the interior.

Accommodation: Sleep Inn

Day 2 – Mikumi National Park

Destination

Mikumi National Park covers approximately 3,230 square kilometers and borders the vast Nyerere ecosystem. Its defining feature is the Mkata Floodplain, a broad open savannah corridor framed by mountain escarpments.

This terrain supports large buffalo herds, zebra migrations, giraffe populations, and lion prides that patrol the floodplain. Compared to Ruaha or Nyerere, Mikumi provides clearer sightlines and easier game-viewing due to open grassland structure.

Day 2 – Mikumi National Park

Day Activity

Early departure from Dar es Salaam via the Morogoro highway (approx. 5–6 hours). Enter Mikumi around midday and begin a structured afternoon game drive. Focus on predator territories near the floodplain and water sources before sunset.

Accommodation: Mikumi Safari Lodge

Day 3 – Mikumi → Nyerere National Park

Destination

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, spans over 30,000 square kilometers, making it one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa. The ecosystem is shaped by the Rufiji River and its network of oxbow lakes, channels, and seasonal floodplains.

The park supports elephant, buffalo, lion, wild dog, and substantial hippo and crocodile populations. The river system distinguishes Nyerere from other Tanzanian parks by allowing boat-based wildlife exploration.

Day 3 – Mikumi → Nyerere National Park

Day Activity

Begin with a short early-morning game drive in Mikumi to capture wildlife movement before departure. Transfer toward Nyerere via scenic southern corridors passing rural communities and transitional woodland ecosystems.

Arrival in Nyerere in the afternoon allows orientation drive along riverine woodland areas. This shorter afternoon drive introduces the change in habitat structure — thicker vegetation, palm-lined waterways, and more dispersed wildlife patterns compared to Mikumi.

Overnight in a riverside lodge or tented camp overlooking the Rufiji system.

4 DAY

Day 4 – Nyerere National Park

Destination

Nyerere offers a distinct safari dimension with boat-based wildlife viewing. Hippo pods, crocodiles, and waterbirds are common along the Rufiji River.

Day 4 – Nyerere National Park

Day Activity

Morning game drive in woodland and riverine zones. Afternoon boat safari along the Rufiji River system, observing wildlife from water level.

Accommodation: Lake Manze Tented Camp

5 DAY

Day 5 – Nyerere Walking Safari

Destination

Nyerere is one of Tanzania’s few national parks legally permitting guided walking safaris. Walking here emphasizes ecological understanding rather than vehicle-based game pursuit. The miombo woodland structure supports diverse birdlife, smaller mammals, and tracks often missed from vehicles.

Day Activity

Early morning walking safari led by an armed ranger and professional guide. The focus is on tracking techniques, spoor identification, plant use, and understanding predator–prey relationships at ground level.

Return to camp for rest during peak heat hours. Afternoon extended game drive targeting African wild dog territories and elephant concentrations near permanent water sources. Optional sunset river exploration depending on wildlife movement.

Accommodation: Lake Manze Tented Camp

Day 6 – Transfer to Ruaha National Park

Destination

Ruaha National Park covers approximately 20,000 square kilometers and forms the core of a larger conservation landscape. It lies at a biogeographical crossroads where East African and Southern African species overlap.

The Great Ruaha River serves as the primary water artery, particularly significant during the dry season when wildlife converges along shrinking riverbeds. Ruaha is recognized for large lion prides, substantial elephant populations, and lower tourism density compared to Northern parks.

Day 6 – Transfer to Ruaha National Park

Day Activity

Transfer from Nyerere to Ruaha either by road (full-day overland expedition) or scheduled light aircraft.

Upon arrival in Ruaha, conduct an orientation drive focusing on river corridors and baobab-dominated terrain. Evening positioning near water sources increases predator observation probability.

Accommodation: Ruaha River Lodge

7 DAY

Day 7 – Ruaha National Park

Destination

Ruaha’s ecosystem blends East African and Southern African species distributions. It supports large prides of lion and significant predator density relative to visitor numbers.

Day 7 – Ruaha National Park

Day Activity

Full-day game drive along the Great Ruaha River and surrounding plains. Emphasis on predator tracking and elephant concentrations.

Tour Cost

The prices below are shown per person and vary depending on the number of travellers and accommodation category selected. Each range reflects real operating costs, including park and conservation fees (with VAT and other applicable taxes), vehicle use, crater service fees, and accommodation in the chosen category.

Because lodge rates and availability can vary seasonally, we present a minimum–maximum range rather than a fixed number. As group size increases, shared costs are reduced, which lowers the overall price per traveller. Final quotations are confirmed based on exact travel dates and selected lodges.
